At Germinal we understand that drought tolerance is a huge problem for countless grassland farmers and have been working tirelessly to deliver drought tolerant products. AberRoot is a new long-term grass variety which is showing excellent drought tolerance traits. The Germinal team have trialled this new variety extensively, at the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) at Aberystwyth University; at the Germinal Research Station and overseas in arid countries as far afield as South America. 

What is AberRoot?

AberRoot is a unique cross, a Festulolium like no other. It is the result of 50 years of research and the crossing of many different species of fescue with high value ryegrasses. The resulting variety – AberRoot, is a cross between Atlas fescue found in north Africa and Aber High Sugar Grass (Aber HSG) bred at IBERS in Wales. It combines the grass quality of Aber HSG, with the persistence and versatility of perennial ryegrass and the deep rooting drought tolerance of Atlas fescue. AberRoot was bred by conventional plant breeding methods, it has passed the UK National list trials and performed exceptionally well in independent trials in England, Wales and Scotland; it has been proven to work on livestock farms and is the only High Sugar Grass Festulolium
